Between the Lines and Between the musical Notes…
Ohh
Come on, say it plain, ohh (ohh)
God is so awesome, He understands your oh, come on, say oh
(Ohh)
Sometimes, you're overwhelmed and you don't know what to say
He can interpret your oh, my sis, just say, oh (ohh)
Heaven understands your, oh
God understands your, oh, ohh (ohh)
Come on, San Fran
If you could just raise up a, ohh (ohh)

Every sound, every vocalization has an interpretation or meaning. This is true even if the sound or the vocalization is not readily recognized as a word. Romans 8:26 states: “…but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” In The Living Bible translation it says “ … but the Holy Spirit prays for us with such feeling that it cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows, of course, what the spirit is saying as He pleads for us in harmony with God’s own will.” There are some feelings that are so profound that they evade words yet they can still be heard. Even though they evade words, their meaning can still be understood. Sometimes they sound like groanings. These groanings are able to be harmonized with the bass line of God’s will.
There are times in the worship of God that we should be bold enough to leave the safety and eloquence of words. There are times in the worship of God that we should be brave enough to reach beyond the safety of notes on a page, a song chart, or a memorized chord progression. First Corinthians 4:20 states: “For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.” Perhaps there is a point where words become too inadequate to serve as vehicles of power. Power does not necessarily need the scripted words or words at all to manifest. Power certainly uses scripted words or spontaneously inspired words. But God’s power does not necessarily need the words to communicate.
It makes sense that God may sometimes circumvent mere human words to communicate because even human emotions do not always need the vehicle of words in order to heard and understood. Sometimes sound, whether from the Lord or from the human heart, can be inaudible but still be heard. Psalm 42:7 says “Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts…” The depths of humanity reach out to the depths of God. This communication between “deeps” seems to be facilitated by the “noise of waterspouts.” In the Amplified version it says the “[thundering] sound of Your waterfalls.” This seems to indicate that sounds are ultrasonic or infrasonic, but they somehow resonate sympathetically with the audible.
First Corinthains 2:4-5 states: “And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but the power of God.” Perhaps at times words can be too enticing of a safeguard, preventing us from total abandonment to the Spirit. Perhaps notes on a page, a song chart, or a memorized progression can be too enticing of a safeguard preventing us to launch out into unknown territory in the world of the Spirit.
In 2 Corinthians 3:6 it says: “… Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the Spirit, for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life.” This scripture is referencing the Old Testament Law but also literacy in general. Both are our first schoolmasters that led us out of utter darkness and ignorance. However, if we never open ourselves up to the Law of the Spirit forever clinging to Law of the letter – we perish and never fully experience the Spirit who gives Life. Words can liberate. Literacy can liberate. But words without power and words mistakenly revered over power, can kill. Musical notes without power and musical notes mistakenly revered over power, can kill.
God empowered words and God empowered scripted musical notes are effective vehicles. However, those empowered words and musical notes are designed to carry us over the threshold into encounters God. But they are not empowered in and of themselves. And at a certain point in the Spirit, they must be abandoned in order to experience the fullness of the power of God. We must reach for what lies hidden between the lines of the lyrics and between the melody notes and chord progressions – the Spirit which gives Life.
