Electric Counterpoint: The Art of the mix

Steve Reich was commissioned by jazz guitarist Pat Metheny to write a piece called “Electric Counterpoint” which combines tape loops and phasing with Central African polyphony, Balinese gamelan rhythms, and Jazz rhythms and harmonies. Our conception of what “Electric Counterpoint” can be expanded and applied to a modern style of composing and performing that not only uses electronic instruments and technology to create but represents a compositional aesthetic encountered in the art of DJing, sampling, and beat making. It is a way of hearing the combinations of lines, the mixing of compositions, or even sound masses as suggested by Edgard Varese and others. It is no less counterpoint than the work of Bach and Buxtehude. Electric counterpoint is an artform that cuts across genres and time periods. This page will be updated periodically with more information and insights into this artform.
